Nestled just 120 miles west of Dallas on beautiful Possum Kingdom Lake, it’s easy to get lost in the beauty of Texas at Camp Grady Spruce YMCA while enjoying a sunrise over Hell’s Gate. Camp life promotes caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility through faith-based, character building activities that encourage campers to establish their own identity. YMCA Camp Grady Spruce is a co-ed overnight camp for children age 6-16 with activities including archery, canoeing, horses, riflery, sailing, skiing, crafts, outdoor living skills and more!

Job Description

The Director of Summer Resident Camp is a full-time exempt position that is year round. While living at camp, this person will be responsible for all CGS Summer Resident Camps. When done well, this person will provide a tremendous growth opportunity for about 1100 campers and 130 young adult staff members during the summer. In addition, this person will contribute to strengthening the legacy and reputation of the YMCA and Camp Grady Spruce as a program that delivers exceptional outdoor programs that inspires, builds, and strengthens relationships. This will be accomplished in a safe environment and with financial integrity. As a member of the CGS leadership team, the Summer Camp Director may be called upon to assist with and Outdoor Education programs, Groups and Family Camping, marketing, and fundraising for the branch.


  • Experience and ability of developing and implementing camp programs of high quality and that has shown increases in enrollment year over year.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in leading staff at camp, preferably as the summer camp director. The Director of Summer Resident Camp will have shown the ability to recruit, train and motivate staff that will conduct a program of high quality. In addition, the person seeking this position needs to show that programs previously supervised have shown growth in participation over several years.
  • The applicant will have experience recruiting campers and developing strategies to ensure retention year over year.
  • The incumbent must have experience in customer relations, be able to respond to requests in a timely manner, and have a sense of order and presentation.
  • Must have organizational, interpersonal, managerial, problem solving, and decision making skills.
    • Applicant must be willing and able to manage controversial situations; manage large number of programs, assignments and tasks simultaneously.
    • Able to speak comfortably in front of large groups; handle difficult individuals, stressful situations and take initiative necessary in dealing w/children and parents.
    • Able to exercise discriminating and independent judgment.
    • Detail oriented, self-starter who must have the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships by promoting and demonstrating caring, honesty, respect and responsibility with staff, volunteers, YMCA members, program participants and general public.
  • The incumbent should be able to develop and monitor a multi-function budget.
  • Must be able to obtain CDL in order to drive camp bus.
  • Must be comfortable with learning new computer programs including but not limited to:
    • YMCA financial software (SGA)
    • Human Resource software (Kronos)
    • Program registration software (Personify)
    • Risk management report software (Origami)
    • YMCA Promises software (Apricot).
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
  • Able to operate all office equipment with proficiency and accuracy.
  • Obtain and maintain any required training and/or certification required for the position.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience plus five years experience in supervisory and administrative skills.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to staffing, programming, ordering equipment, health and safety, promoting and marketing, and business aspects of program. This person is responsible for developing and implementing a year-round teen program. This will include summer camp leadership training (LIT, CIT, JC, Leadership Y) and teen program meetings during the school year. They will develop and monitor a budget of $801,000 in such a manner as meeting or exceeding the expectations for the branch financial status. This person must live on site and will be responsible to respond to guests and staff as needed during programs 24 hours a day. Position will assist in recruiting annual campaigners and provide support to volunteers during Campaign and Golf Tournament.
