Job Description

Danville is located on the Virginia and North Carolina border, northwest of Raleigh, NC and south of Lynchburg, VA, the community has one of the lowest cost of living in Virginia. It is a historical small town but close to many big town amenities. The city is situated in Pittsylvania County which is the largest County in Virginia and showcases a top-rated school district.

The Danville Family YMCA has a rich history of over 135 years in a community that has recently built a brand new state of the art facility along the beautiful Dan River in Downtown Danville, Virginia in September 2014.

The Danville Family YMCA is looking for a motivated, energetic professional to lead the Aquatics Department for our YMCA. The successful candidate will be responsible for overall organization, administration, development, supervision and implementation of Aquatics rules, procedures and regulations. This individual should be recognized as a leader in his or her field, staff, and the community.

Salary and Benefits

  1. Salary starting range is $30,000-$34,000 annualized.
  2. 12% annualized retirement contribution from the Danville Family YMCA (when eligibility requirements are met).

Residency Expectation

  1. Live in the YMCA’s service area.


  1. Promotes and incorporates the YMCA core values and character development model in to all program activities.
  2. Responsible for staff recruitment and development.
  3. Work with staff to develop growth opportunities and increase capacity within association.
  4. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  5. Organizes and schedules program registrations.
  6. Compiles program statistics and recommends corrective action to supervisor.
  7. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.
  8. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with other community organizations.
  9. Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  10. Coordinates use and coverage of branch facilities for program activities and events.
  11. Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with the branch strategic plans.
  12. Assists in branch fundraising activities and special events.
  13. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  14. Directly supervise and manage the Danville River Otter Swim Team Program.


  1. 4-year college degree (preferred) or 3-5 years of equivalent work experience.
  2. Current CPR/First Aid Certification (will provide training)
  3. Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  4. Supervisory, fiscal management and program development experience
  5. Computer proficiency: MS Office applications required
  6. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  7. Strong swimming ability with comfort around water
  8. Lifeguard Certified (preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Current YMCA Lifeguard Certification. All staff must be transitioned to YMCA Lifeguard within 90 days of hire date.
  2. Current First Aid certification.
  3. Current Automatic External Defibrillation certification.
  4. Current Oxygen Management certification.
  5. Current YSL or WSI certification.
  6. YSL Trainer and Y Lifeguard Trainer certifications obtained within one year of hire date.

Essential Functions

  1. Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and Y-USA health and safety regulations.
  2. Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  3. Maintains accurate records of staff certifications.
  4. Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools.
  5. Secures and schedules pool facilities.
  6. Conducts training for lifeguards, swim instructors, First Aid and CPR.
  7. Creates and schedules swim classes, water fitness classes, and swim team practices and meets.
  8. Performs lifeguard and swim instructor duties as required.
  9. Maintains first aid kits for aquatics department.
