Mill Hollow is a Resident Camp focused on outdoor education and environmental sustainability located high in Utah's Uinta mountains.

Job Description

Outdoor Education is an opportunity for campers to bridge the summer learning gap, to explore and ask questions in an outdoor setting, to get dirty and learn to feel comfortable while establishing a sense of place. Outdoor Education Camp Counselors will empower students to connect with nature, have fun while learning, and help create memories this summer that will last a lifetime.For many of our campers this is the first time they have ever been in the natural world. You will be their guide, mentor, and teacher on their journey of discovery.

Outdoor education counselors will focus on educating youth about environmental sustainability, conservation, and respect for nature. Camp counselors will work with youth ages 7-17. As an OED camp counselor, you will have the opportunity to turn Utah’s amazing mountain landscape into an outdoor laboratory where campers have the opportunity to experience STEM with real-world applications outside of a classroom.OED camp counselors introduce STEM subjects through daily activities, such as water and forest ecology, ecological literacy, mountain ecosystems, and more.


  • Complete all child abuse prevention training as required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Proven abilities in working with children and in recreational settings
  • Experience and skills in a variety of camp experiences
  • Prior customer service experience preferred
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications (within the past year)
  • Must be able to work mid-June to mid-August
  • Willingness to be trained in outdoor education and team building skills
  • Ability to work with different age and skills levels of customers.
  • Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff.
  • Must be flexible with varied scheduled program hours.
  • Work Environment and Physical Demands:
  • The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be hiking up to 10 miles per day at elevations between 8,000-10,000 feet.
  • Must be able to manage large groups of both children and adults with aplomb.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking.
  • The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • Ability to identify and respond to hazards in camp; such as emergency plan implementation (fire, evacuation, illness, injury).

Essential Functions

  • Plan, organize and implement summer camp programming with a focus on outdoor education.
  • Assist Program Directors in organizing the overall program structure.
  • Assist Program Directors in hosting of groups at camp both weekends and weekdays.
  • Teach Outdoor Education curriculum as well as running traditional camp programming.
  • Serves as a positive role model for students, campers, and staff peers.
  • Provide feedback and input at staff meetings.
  • Support and act as a resource person to fellow staff members.
  • Responsible for facilitating safe programs which meet the customers’ needs.
  • Light maintenance and kitchen duties as needed.
  • Lead or assist campfire or other evening programs.
  • Responsible for set up and take down of program areas.
  • Attend in-service training appropriate to all components of program delivery and service.
  • Share with fellow staff teaching and leadership tools and tricks.
  • Maintain high levels of safety standards and enforces all rules we require customers to follow.
  • Assist Program Directors in all other programmatic requests and group needs.
  • Additional duties as requested

Required Certifications
