“We’re going to leave a mark, and we’re leaving it together.” – Y Staff Member
Name of Project: Togetherhood Day of Service
YMCA: Wabash County YMCA
Date: September 2014
Members of the Wabash County Family YMCA, in partnership with the Wabash Area Ministerial Association, brought together volunteers for a countywide day of service. Over 380 volunteers served 26 different community organizations.
A Y staff member kicked off the event by saying: “This is an awesome gathering of our community to come together, not to be served but to serve. We’re going to leave a mark, and we’re leaving it together.”
Wabash County has a population of 34,000 people and more than 40 churches. One goal of Togetherhood was to invite church congregations to serve together. “Wabash has been wonderful to me my whole life,” one volunteer shared. “It’s great to do something in return.”
At the end of the service day, the volunteers gathered for live music provided by church groups and a donated cook out.
“Today is a coming together of our community,” one volunteer reflected. “A community that focuses on caring for their neighbor is a community where people want to live and people feel valued. And greatness comes out of communities that have that as a characteristic…because together, we are better.”
