YMCA of the USA Selects a Location for Its National Office


CHICAGO, IL, September 16, 2009 — YMCA of the USA, the national office for the nation’s 2,686 YMCAs, today announced its decision to keep its national office in downtown Chicago.  The organization will occupy a 70,000 square feet space, located on three floors of 101 North Wacker Drive, a Hines property.

“YMCA of the USA’s decision to remain in Chicago is a reflection of our commitment to the city and our desire to keep nearly 230 jobs in the city’s center,” said Neil Nicoll, YMCA of the USA President and CEO.

YMCA of the USA has been headquartered at 101 North Wacker Drive since moving to Chicago in 1981.  As part of its new agreement, the organization will occupy two new custom-designed floors, as well as one floor that it currently occupies.  YMCA of the USA selected this location after an extensive review of more than 60 potential locations, including options to lease, purchase and build to suit.  Working closely with Chicago-based commercial real estate firm, U.S. Equities Realty, the organization determined that 101 North Wacker Drive would offer the best combination of location, economics and building amenities.  In addition, international commercial real estate firm, Hines, is in the midst of a major upgrade to the Chicago landmark property. 

“We looked for space that reflected the YMCA’s dynamic culture and national stature, but also shaped the organization’s ability to serve its member YMCAs,” said Martin Stern, Executive Vice President of U.S. Equities Realty.  The office’s proximity to several commuter hubs also made it an ideal location for many of the YMCA staff that commute.

As part of the search for a new national office, YMCA of the USA purchased land in the South Loop in 2005. However, with new YMCA leadership, the organization adopted a new strategic plan, which was not dependent on a larger centralized office.  This land, located on the east side of State Street between Harrison and Balbo, is now being marketed by U.S. Equities Realties.
