YMCA Exchanges

The International Branch of the YMCA of Greater New York provides a broad range of international programs and services designed to promote a better understanding of the world and enable people to work together toward peace and justice.

Many of these programs serve as a resource for local YMCAs looking to add international elements to their existing offerings. There are a variety of exchange opportunities for individuals living in the U.S. to travel overseas as well as for YMCAs and local communities to host young people from all over the world.  Programs include:

Global Teens is a youth development program that has served over 350 New York City teenagers. Participants engage in a series of activities including international travel, cultural exchange and community service.

International Camp Counselor Program (ICCP) annually brings thousands of young adults from 60 nations to serve as counselors at day and resident camps throughout the USA. ICCP provides leadership opportunities for young adults while helping camps internationalize their programs.

YMCA International Career Advancement Programs allows U.S. organizations to internationalize their staff and programs while providing needed training to emerging professionals from around the world.

YMCA and the United Nations

The International Branch of the YMCA of Greater New York serves as the World Alliance of YMCAs liaison to the United Nations, based in New York City. Headquartered in Switzerland, the World Alliance of YMCAs has consultative status with the UN's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is thus entitled to make its views known on agenda issues where the YMCA has interest or expertise. It is also an official Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). As an NGO, the YMCA may attend briefings of the Department of Public Information, serve on NGO committees and spread the word about the UN's work.
