What do you do to recharge?

Mommying is constant. There’s no way around it. Even when you’re not actively with your kids, you’re thinking about them, worrying about them, planning for them… you get it, you’re living it!

We have to be whole to be able to give to others more

In My Tribe

A few years ago author and solutionary, Seth Godin, offered something for us to think about in one of his books about community: as blogs and social media channels are connecting us together and at fervent pace and at an exponential rate, we're creating online tribes that are getting bigger and bigger, upwards in the tens of thousands and into the millions. But every tribe has a visionary and someone to take charge of the ideas that link us together. So, when it comes to the awesome, thrilling, ever-changing being that is the Web, who's going to step up and lead?  more

Step Away from the Screen!

Last week was Screen-Free Week. I didn’t notice because my eyes were on the prize: Mother’s Day, the best day of all.

Now that the mommy merriment has simmered down, I’m catching up on other things discussed in Internetland, which (paradoxically) included Screen-Free Week.

Parents are forced to think about screens from the start. There are clear reasons to turn off screens. more

Necessity, the Mother of Invention

I have hippy tendencies that bob to the surface but are usually whack-a-moled by my competing love of convenience. Communal living tiny houses (now with movement status), minimal personal hygiene (this one gets tempered pretty quickly by The Spouse and lingering looks from strangers), and a macrobiotic diet have all been suppressed for now. more more

Epilogue to Mother’s Day

Yesterday, I was riding the bus, minding my own business. I can’t always say that, but yesterday it was true. Then, this beautiful moment unfolded.

A group of grandmas (pardon my presumption, but I’m painting a picture) were saying goodbye to one of their friends about to get off the bus, everyone wishing everyone else a happy Mother’s Day. As one grandma stepped off the bus and onto the curb, she said to no one and everyone, “happy Mother’s Day to all mothers!” more

Pancakes on Mother’s Day

Like everyone else until the day you’re anointed a mom, I spent my life on the appreciating end of Mother’s Day, which meant that every year about this time I was reliably filled with dread. How do you sufficiently appreciate your mother in one day? Does a pancake breakfast in bed suffice? What if you add blueberries? Maybe a Mother’s Day card that sings “Wind Beneath My Wings”?

FOMO vs. JOLL

So, if we have to tell you what that means, then you probably have a good handle on your Facebook feed and your Instagram binges in check. For the rest of us, FOMO often stands in the way of getting out there and getting connected with real friends and real live scenery. What's the cure for FOMO? We don't have a scientific answer, but why not give JOLL a try?

Why Wait?

A few weeks ago, we posted a blog about a very creative use of post-it notes. While the fruits of these labors were pretty impressive (and quite beautiful), it got us to thinking what we actually write on these littles stickies to get things done. Are you crossing out the things on your to-do list or are they just littering your desk? If they're piling up, there may be a reason for this...
