U.S. Track & Field Championships

For an off year in track when there is no World Championships or Olympics, there is still plenty of top notch competition at the national championships this year. In the men's 10,000 meter Thursday night, Chris Derrick asserted himself with confidence, while Galen Rupp showed his dominance by pulling away convincingly in the beginning of the last lap, and coasted in for his sixth consecutive title. more

How Fast Could the Average World Cup Player Run A Mile?

Of all the most popular sports, I have the most respect for soccer. According to STATS, a company that uses a motion-tracking technology called SportVu to collect detailed statistics on players from a number of sports, football cornerbacks and wide receivers average about 1.25 miles a game, basketball players only slightly more, and tennis players about 3-5 miles in a three set match, the average soccer player (not including the goalie) averages about 7 miles a game, and some players up to 9.5 miles. That includes a lot of sprinting, which is an impressive feat of fitness and athleticism even without considering everything else that goes into the game. more

Do More With Less

For most people, the long, idle summer days we enjoyed during vacation as kids are a faded memory. Now there is more to do than ever. Softball and beach volleyball leagues, street festivals, concerts, bike trips, barbecues, pool parties, and if you're a parent, all kinds of sports and activities to chauffer the kids to. That's a lot to compete with a daily running schedule, and many people just can't fit a run in every day. Yet some people thrive on a minimalist schedule of three days a week, to the point where they can be quite competitive. more
