Being Community

You have a voice. And so does Sean. This is his Y. His words. His story.

Several weeks ago while sitting at the dining room table eating my oatmeal breakfast I noticed a dry oat slowly moving across the kitchen floor.  Intrigued by the magically moving oat I got down on my hands and knees to offer a closer inspection only to find that this mysterious oat was being carried by a very small and very strong ant.  My usual inclination would be to assist this ant in transitioning to the here after but warding off my temptation to help was the great lesson the ant was teaching me about who we need to be in community in order to see change in our community.  more

Where Anybody from Any Culture, Any Country, Can Come and Be Welcomed

You have a voice. And so does Nicole. This is her Y. Her words. Her story.

One of my passions in life is working with youth, helping them to embrace diversity and discover their own potential. I get to follow this passion by leading the Minority Achievers’ Program (MAP) at my local Y. As a bilingual, bicultural Latina and first generation college graduate, I have a deep and personal connection to the MAP mission, serving students of color and immigrant youth.  more

What Makes a 21st-Century Leader Great?

We're only 14 years in, but let's not let that hold us back from defining what it takes to be a great leader in the 21st Century. Some say you have to be bold, stand and deliver, and bring out the best in everyone. Others make the case that it's being an optimist, fun and jovial to be around, and able to liven up any situation when things are looking down.  more

How Much Sleep Do You Need?

You just crammed for an all-nighter before a big test tomorrow. Maybe it's Sunday night, and you're lying in bed wide awake at 3 in the morning when your alarm for work's going to go off at 7. Or perhaps you just stepped off a plane and no matter how you adjusted the head rest or your neck pillow, you still couldn't get more than two hours of shut eye. Just how much sleep do we need to be productive and lead a well-rested life? more
