Job Description:

The Portage Township YMCA is located 40 miles southeast of Chicago and has been serving the Portage community since 1969. We are a growing YMCA with a dynamic opportunity for the right person to help grow our membership through a more actively developed health and wellness program.

The Director of Healthy Living is responsible for oversight and leadership of physical programs and services including group exercise, wellness programming, aquatics, adult and youth sports and community wellness programming in conjunction with our medical partner, St. Mary Medical Center. This position is a key member of the leadership team for the Portage Township YMCA and has an emphasis in membership recruitment and retention. Focus is placed on the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith as well as philosophies regarding building a healthy spirit, mind and body.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee and lead coordinators and direct report staff in Health and Wellness, Group Exercise, Aquatics and all Sports programming at the Portage Township YMCA.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise adequate staff and volunteers to meet needs of members and community.
  • When required, develop and implement plans to ensure no lapse in service occurs.
  • Research and define health and wellness needs and interests in Portage Township and develop and implement corresponding new programs, special events and services in response.
  • Directly or indirectly oversee the daily operations of the fitness centers including cleanliness, security, and equipment supply, purchase, and maintenance.
  • Actively strengthen and pursue collaborations, with the purpose of promoting new and improved YMCA programming, within YMCA buildings and throughout the community.
  • Provide leadership and expertise on matters impacting health and wellness of members and participants throughout the Portage community.
  • Serve as an advocate for improved services and program design. Drive program and facility schedules to ensure maximum benefit to members and program participants. Ensure our organization actively engages those of all ages and levels of skill and fitness, including families.
  • In conjunction with the Membership Director, ensure fiscal integrity of specified departments, ensuring ongoing growth of revenue. Follow all fiscal policies. Ensure quality of all programs, including curriculum design incorporating specific physical and educational skills, YMCA core values and developmental assets. Develop, schedule and implement marketing plan and public relations efforts for programs and services.
  • Increase community perception of YMCA as leader in Health and Wellness. Improve recruitment and retention of adult members through participation in the development and implementation of related plans, services, and initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records essential for control, evaluation and reporting purposes.
  • Participate in professional duties including, but not limited to, "manager on duty", staff meetings, special events and annual support campaign.
  • Personally build relationships with YMCA members, program participants and families through daily interactions.
  • All other duties as directed or required for the overall success of the organization.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • YMCA of the USA Team Leader certification (must acquire within one year of hire)
  • Current personal training, group exercise instructing or health fitness specialist certification through a nationally recognized, accredited association such as AFAA, NASM, ACSM or ACE as well as current CPR, First Aid & AED certifications.
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in the area of Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Kinesiology or a related field is preferred.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

  • Must be able to perform the physical skills required to participate in and lead fitness programs, including those of a physical nature.

Salary: $26,000 - $30,000

Additional Compensation Details:

Insurance: Individual plans available for medical, vision, dental and life insurance.

Paid Time Off: 7 floating holidays per year; 2 weeks of vacation per year with 1-3 years Y service; 3 weeks per year with 4-15 years of Y service; 1 paid sick day per month with no more than 15 paid sick days per year accumulated; 3 paid personal days per year.

YMCA Membership: Complimentary YMCA membership for you and greatly reduced memberships and discounts for your household members.

YMCA Retirement Plan: (If you are already in the plan at another Y, you may transfer in immediately). After 2 years of service, during which you have worked at least 1,000 hours each year, you will be eligible to participate in the retirement plan. You must be 21 years old. The Y currently contributes 5% of your salary to this plan and 3% will automatically be deducted from your salary as your contribution for a total of 8%. This amount is subject to change. You are vested 100% when you become eligible to join the plan. You may also make a payroll-deducted contribution to the plan if you wish. You may make pre-tax,voluntarycontributions, up to the statutory limits, regardless of your hours worked or length of service (You may begin doing this immediately after hired).
