WELLNESS DIRECTOR
YMCA: I.D. Pennock Family YMCA
Location: Rockford, IL
Job Description:
- Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Wellness Director will develop, organize, administer and evaluate programs which include but are not limited to: group exercise, Wellness Coaching, youth fitness and personal training. This position is responsible for wellness center and group exercise scheduling and oversees wellness center operations. The Wellness Director must support and participate in on-going association efforts to:
- Make meaningful, lasting organizational improvement and sustainable change, and
- Transform the way the YMCA works to support all health seekers and our community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Activities
- Maintains safety as top priority at all times
- Teaches and demonstrates the YMCA mission, values, and character development in all associations with staff, members, program participants, volunteers, and the community.
- In cooperation with other program managers, prepares and coordinates wellness program plans. Monitors statistics on a regular basis and makes any needed adjustments to programs not meeting minimum enrollment targets.
- Develops new and existing programs that match organization mission and objectives with an emphasis on serving health seekers and offering innovative programs that serve their needs.
- Keeps all equipment and supplies maintained in an orderly and safe manner.
- Keeps all wellness, group exercise and personal training areas clean, and establishes a process for maintaining cleanliness.
- Keeps abreast of local, state, and national innovations and trends in the fields of Wellness, nutrition and group exercise.
- Conducts regular staff meetings and trainings.
- Establishes and maintains a manageable mix of administrative duties and "front-line" responsibilities (e.g. class instruction, wellness floor, etc.).
- Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with YMCA partner groups and organizations to deliver needed programs to the community.
Member Service
- Identifies and resolves problems and/or concerns in a professional, timely manner to ensure a high level of member satisfaction and retention. Always conveys a positive attitude when interacting with members and participants of all ages.
- Performs duties related to wellness in the absence of other staff.
- Motivates all members to continue their YMCA participation. Builds and maintains positive, caring, respectful relationships with a diverse population of people.
Other
- Prepares and submits annual department budget(s) to Executive Director within assigned time frame. Monitors monthly financial performance, manages budget to successfully meet agreed upon departmental goals.
- In cooperation with other program managers, develops and submits program information as well as schedules for program catalog preparation within assigned time frame. Develops department marketing plan(s) to coincide with annual budget(s) following all association marketing and promotional guidelines.
- As needed, makes presentations and represents the YMCA at community events, health fairs, etc. to promote YMCA programs and services.
- Effectively functions as a member of the YMCA staff team; develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with supervisor, colleagues, and other YMCA staff and volunteers.
- Attends all association meetings as required.
- Participates in rotating on-call (MOD) duties as assigned.
- Participates in and provides support to the annual YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.
- Participates in YMCA events, training and career development opportunities. Establishes professional networks both within and outside the YMCA movement.
- In cooperation with supervisor, develops and completes an annual professional training plan.
- All other duties as assigned or necessary relative to the welfare of the association.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for all employees within the Health and Wellness.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities (interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, development and performance evaluation) in accordance with YMCA policies and applicable laws.
- Reviews and approves employee timecards.
- Monitors and updates any required staff certifications.
- Delegates above responsibilities, as appropriate, to achieve desired objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university or at least four years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Leadership and administrative experience in Wellness, Nutrition, Group Exercise, and other related areas.
- Experience in supervising and training staff.
- Experience with budget and program administration.
- Working knowledge of computer software applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel).
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Current Group Exercise Certifications
Have (or obtain within the first year of employment):
- Personal Training Certification
- YMCA Director, Professional Director, or Senior Director Certification
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and information for association publications. Ability to respond appropriately and professionally to common inquiries or concerns from members, participants, regulatory agencies, and vendors. Have a high degree of human relation skills - ability to effectively communicate and manage information to/from peers, staff and volunteers.
MATHMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate and analyze budget figures, program statistics, and variances. A high degree of accuracy and skill with quantitative information.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems, deal with a variety of situations, and make decisions based on logical reasoning. Ability to take initiative, work independently, possess effective time management skills, and respond to a variety of situations and manage several tasks and projects at the same time. Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, wet/humid conditions, heat and cold. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
EFFECT ON END RESULTS
This position directs Health and Wellness services for a multi-branch YMCA with full facilities at maximum efficiency, cost effectiveness, safety and courtesy to support the member service objectives of the YMCA and to ensure its quality, growth, and financial soundness.
Salary: $25,000 - $30,000
