The Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer is the operations leader for the organization and reports directly to the CEO. S/he will partner with the entire senior leadership team and the board of directors to develop and implement the strategic vision throughout the organization.

The Senior Vice President of Operations oversees the operations of the YMCA of San Francisco and has budget responsibility for over $65 million in revenue, 14 branch operations and a total workforce of over 1,800 employees.

A significant responsibility of the Senior Vice President of Operations (COO) is to activate the Association's strategic vision by implementing the strategic plan and its principal goals, thereby developing operational plans to fulfill the vision of the CEO and Board for greater impact in our communities.

GENERAL FUNCTION:

The Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Operations Officer has the leadership responsibility for the Association's strategic direction, financial stability, community relations, staffing, development and organizational planning. The Senior Vice President of Operations and COO must be aware and embrace our multi-faceted diverse community, its opportunities, challenges, needs and resources and have a broad knowledge of the YMCA locally, nationally, and world wide.

This position requires a team player with the ability to effectively work with stakeholders in the community, members, staff and volunteers. A key competency requirement of the COO is the ability to attract, hire and retain a diverse and competent team of staff; to create, shape and track the strategic direction and business plan against new and existing initiatives.

The Senior Vice President and COO must have proven broad leadership skills and the ability to achieve organizational and community change. The COO must be future oriented, a sound planner and organizer to establish and direct the achievement of long range strategic goals.

KNOW HOW/NATURE AND BACKGROUND:

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in business, physical education, recreation, human development, psychology or wellness. Masters degree in non-profit management, organizational psychology, public administration or business administration preferred. Fifteen or more years of professional management experience including executive leadership within a YMCA or equivalent; YMCA Organizational Leadership certification required. Experience and leadership in program development, financial development, board development, marketing and communications, public relations, fiscal management, human resources, risk management, executive leadership and supervision required.

This position is concerned primarily with the achievement of the purpose, goals and objectives of the organization, as it carries on a variety of activities with constituents in our three county geography. S/he must have knowledge and understanding of leadership skills in the operation of the business affairs of the Association, within its local structure and scope, as well as its place in the YMCA field, national and global settings. S/he must possess ability and skills in fund raising and in the appropriate handling of employee relations in California.

This position is heavily weighed on the human relations side. It is necessary that s/he has a clear understanding and interest in diversity and inclusion and be able to develop and foster relationships between and among the general public, our local communities, staff and volunteer. S/he must be able to delegate appropriate responsibilities for day-to-day operations to the operations and Executive Leadership teams and other administration groups. S/he must guide or direct all actions within a continuing consciousness of the operating objectives of the YMCA of San Francisco Association as defined in the long and short range strategic plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

2. Provides direction for implementing and achieving the goals set forth in the strategic plan, and annual operating plans for all of the branches and Association Office, in alignment with the Association plan.

7. Excellent facilitator who is experienced in resolving conflicts and working with people to come to reasonable solutions.

8. Decisive individual who possesses a strategic focus as well as an operational, implementation and detail-oriented perspective.

9. Develops, implements and manages operational budgets.

10. Leads and directs operations of the branch facilities and assigned programs, nutrition and healthy eating policies and practices, which may include health and physical education, youth sports, youth programs, childcare, aquatics, membership and special events programs.

11. Represents the YMCA and maintains appropriate relationships with area organizations, community leaders, and businesses.

12. Identifies and maintains effective succession strategies to ensure the next generation of leadership and maintains effective succession strategies to ensure the next generation of cause driven leaders.

13. Oversees administrative activities for the conduct of the annual fundraising campaign for the branches.

14. Hires, trains, leads, supervises and evaluates operations staff including all Branch Executive Directors, District Vice Presidents and Vice Presidents of Operations.

15. Responsible for all branch operations and directly and/or indirectly supervises all branch Executive Directors.

16. Provides leadership, guidance and staff development to Executives.

17. Develops relationships with community leaders and promotes collaboration with agencies, schools, and other organizations.

18. Oversees the management, maintenance and capital development of all branches and group facilities.

19. Oversees the development and administration of the facility plans and supervises VP of Property Development.

20. Oversees the marketing and public relations programs of the Association, supervises the Director of Marketing and Communication.

21. Serves as the chair and leader of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and supports the overall objectives of the Association.

22. Works collaboratively with the CEO to direct the long range strategic planning for the Association.

23. Demonstrates the "Character Counts" values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.

24. Participates in training and abides by the cause driven leadership guidelines for the YMCA.

25. All other duties as assigned by the CEO.

EFFECT ON END RESULT:

This position has a primary duty for the overall impact of YMCA of San Francisco programs in accomplishing its aims and objectives in service to the community. The effectiveness of this position will be measured by:

1. Putting the purpose of the YMCA into action through strategic plan, in service to the community.

2. Positive measurements of employee and program member satisfaction in all aspects of the YMCA of San Francisco.

3. Demonstrably positive program outcomes by participants.

4. The sound administration of the affairs of the Association evident in purposeful and coordinated programs, good public relations, sound financial and records systems, strong and forward looking property management.

5. The development and maintenance of strong volunteer, staff and community relations.

6. The exercise of good judgment, integrity and competence in implementing stated needs, objectives, and interests of the YMCA as enunciated and defined by the CEO and Board of Directors.

7. The operational and financial success and sustainability of the YMCA of San Francisco.

8. Positive impact on the lives of children, families and communities in pursuit of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

9. Acts with the mission, values and integrity of a cause driven leader of the YMCA.

Salary: $200,000 - $240,000
