Job Description and Required Certifications: The YMCA of Greater New York is the largest youth-service organization in NYC. The organization has grown to encompass 21 branches and more than 140 sites throughout the five boroughs of New York City in addition to three camp sites and an upstate conference center. The New York YMCA Camp, located in Huguenot, New York, is seeking for experienced individuals who will assist in the successful operation of the sleep-away summer camp program. The Cabin Counselor/Lifeguard will oversee a cabin and groups of campers in daily camp activities. S/he will also be responsible for the designated swimming area. Room and board provided. Responsibilities: Provide a physically and emotionally, safe, clean, and healthy environment. Create strong cabin unity through shared experiences, nightly vespers, and daily teambuilding activities. Be a consistent role model to the campers. Provide supervision and guidance, ensuring all have a joyful and beneficial experience. Work closely and in unison with your Co-Counselor. Communicate any concerns or problems, relating to campers or facility, to your immediate supervisor. Teach assigned activities, motivating campers to participate in organized, safe, and fun activities. Supervise campers at all times. Plan and organize cabin activities. Recognize and acknowledge good behavior throughout the day and notify your Division Leader of any campers consistent good behavior. Manage camper issues or activities. Take steps to correct poor behavior and refer problems to your Division Leader or Cabin Life Director when necessary. Work with campers to keep the cabin clean during cabin clean up time. Meet with the Village Director weekly to discuss your performance, agree upon areas for improvement and address your concerns. Work with the activity specialists to plan and run activities. Follow camp policies and procedures at all times while performing duties. Assist in the planning for an Inter-Camp Committee. Plan and prepare campers to participate in evening programs, chapels, and campfires. Attend weekly staff meetings. Help with planning a Special Event Day. Report to the Waterfront Director and adhere to all rules set forth by him/her while at the waterfront. Report any waterfront related concerns or issues to the Waterfront Director or Village Director in a timely manner. Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent. Current CPR/ First Aid/Oxygen and YMCA Lifeguard certifications. Minimum of 18 years of age. Must be responsible and caring, and enjoy working with children and being outdoors.
Salary Information: $180.00 P/W
