Job Description and Required Certifications: The West Suburban YMCA in Newton, MA seeks an Outdoor Education Facilitator / Ropes Course Facilitator to oversee all aspects of Adventure programming at the Newton YMCA location and Camp Chickami location in Wayland, MA. The OE Facilitator is responsible for management and implementation of a High Ropes, Low Ropes and teambuilding program that allows all campers and students to achieve goals as a group, while providing campers the chance to challenge themselves. The OE Facilitator will be responsible for the safety of the activities, equipment and participants. The specialist will provide a safe and nurturing environment for campers and staff and will be actively involved and have a positive attitude about all program activities. The OE Facilitator will be responsible for developing and implementing programs in Outdoor Adventure that will meet the needs of our membership and community. The OE Facilitator will facilitate ice breakers, initiatives and debriefs for a variety of groups including youth students, campers, and adults. The OE Facilitator will add to the documentation of new initiatives and enhancement of curriculum already established. Periodic equipment and hardware inspections and minor repairs. Enforce gear organization and care among participants. Proven technical skills in the set-up and use of top rope belay systems in an outdoor setting. POSITION REQUIRMENTS: • B.S. or equivalent in Physical Education, Community Recreation, Adventure Programming, Outdoor Science or related discipline and/or training equivalent • Preferred Wilderness First Responder Certification, and/or EMT Certification • Minimum of 2 years’ experience leadings groups of 6-40 students on a high and low ropes element, challenge course, team building, etc. • Advanced Skills and Standards Training or equivalent • Ability to handle assignments with minimal instruction and supervision. • Positive attitude and desire to be part of a cohesive team. • Sound judgment, integrity, problem solving skills and risk management. • Possess certifications or willingness to certify in First Aid and Adult and CPR • Well organized, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and mature individual • Knowledge and demonstration of Leave No Trace ethics TECHNICAL SKILL REQUIREMENTS 1. Correctly tie in to rope: attachment point to carabineer, double bowline knot, with safety knot 2. Correctly tie in to rope: attachment point to harness, figure-eight follow through, with safety knot 3. Locate, secure and store all climbing wall equipment 4. Facilitate the climber into harness and helmet, Set up ATC device 5. Conduct a thorough safety talk - physical and emotional safety 6. Proficient Belay skills 7. Demonstrate knowledge of belay commands 8. Lift 40 pounds using proper technique; 9. Must be able to climb a 5.7 rated climb safely using/demonstrating proper technique; 10. Must be able to belay a top rope climber safely using/demonstrating proper technique; 11. Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle; 12. Able to visually and audibly identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities.

Salary Information: $10-$20 per hour, salary commensurate with experience
