Two historic YMCA Camps located in pristine northern Michigan seek a Director of Operations to manage our camps' logistics in a year round position.

Position Title:    Operations Manager, YMCA Hayo-Went-Ha Camps, Central Lake, MI

Reports to:        Director of Outdoor Education

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • High level computer skills: Proficiency in MS Office, data base management
  • CDL or ability to obtain CDL within two months of start of employment
  • Certified trainer of challenge course operators required within one year of start of employment (training paid for by HWH Camps)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously
Salary: Annual salary of $23,660. Year-round room and board is included as a part of the employment package, if desired. Manager assured of a single room in a home shared with other staff.
Benefits:  Full medical and dental insurance (20% copay by employees) and YMCA Retirement Fund when eligible (currently at 12% with State Y paying 11% and employee paying 1%). A generous paid time off and vacation package is included.
This is a full time exempt position in a Seasonally Exempt Organization.

General Function: 
  • The State YMCA of Michigan operates two large, year-round camps: YMCA Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha at Arbutus Lake, and YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha at Torch Lake. The Operations Manager will oversee the general operations at both camp sites in the following areas: transportation, challenge courses, trip schedules and trip equipment and food, with some involvement in the sailing program and horse programs. The Operations Manager will work at both YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha, 919 N. East Torch Lake Drive, Central Lake, MI 49622 and YMCA Camp Arbutus Hayo-Went-Ha, 1380 E. Arbutus Lake Road, Traverse City, MI  49696. Housing, if desired, will be provided at the Central Lake site.
  • The Operations Manager must be proactive and enthusiastic, and focused on training, safety and certification. They must be willing to learn and grow within the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Transportation: Oversee the bus, van and vehicles of both camps. Insure safety through proper D.O.T. registration. Hire, train and/or certify CDL drivers for the bus fleet. Log all mileage/use of vehicles and record maintenance on vehicles. Responsible for leases on new vans and repairs on owned vehicles.  Serve as liaison between camp and the insurance company.
  • Challenge Courses: Oversee the challenge courses at both camp sites. Work with authorized companies to secure all inspections and properly maintain all equipment. Obtain certification so that the operations manager will become the trainer of all HWH Camps staff on the challenge course. Oversee the log books maintained on each course for course use. Secure new equipment as needed. Look to the future by investigating new elements for each course.
  • Trip Schedules:  Organize and coordinate trip/away from camp bus schedules year round in coordination with the three directors. This includes obtaining permits for camping, securing additional travel needs (boats, trains, etc), insuring transportation is being used in the most effective manner, oversee mileage log books on all vehicles, coordination of drivers for the extensive tripping program. Coordinating drivers for the day camp (summer) program.  Works with Fall/Winter/Spring Director to create efficient travel plans for school transport.
  • Trip Equipment and Trip Food:  Oversee the “trip shack” at both camps. Monitor the trip shack director so that they will have the needed equipment for all summer camping trips. Order all trip food from our “dehydrated foods” purveyor in the “off season” and coordinate the ordering with the Director of Food Service of all trip food in the summer. Keep an inventory of all equipment at both camps and properly put away all equipment at the end of the camping season.
  • Sailing:  Though actually sailing is NOT a part of the job. The Operations Manager will oversee the “launch”/getting boats, lifts and waterfront equipment ready at the beginning of each summer season. This person will then equally make sure that all of this equipment is taken care of properly and put away in the winter season. They will also be in charge of an inventory of aquatic equipment.
  • Horse: Similar to sailing, this person will NOT be riding or teaching riding as a part of their job. Rather, they will oversee the introduction of the horses to AHWH in the spring. They will make sure that facilities, equipment, and food are all ready for the horse arrival. The annual leasing of horses will be coordinated between the Operations Manager and the Camp Director at AHWH. Equally, they will then oversee the horses’ departure from AHWH and the proper storage of equipment and food. They will also be in charge of an inventory of horse/equine equipment.
  • Managing Seasonal Transitions: Develop and implement a seasonal transition plan for both sites that covers all seasonal program equipment and preparing each site and program area for the coming season.  This includes but is not limited to:  Storage and seasonal maintenance of all vehicles, boats, trailers, etc., storage and seasonal maintenance of all ropes course equipment and elements, setting up and tearing down of the ski shack, preparation and care of the skis and snowshoes.  Assist the Buildings and Grounds Directors with snow removal as necessary.
  • Coordination of Weekend Groups:  In conjunction with the Fall/Winter/Spring Director, serve as on-site coordinator of seasonal weekend groups.  Supervise staff during these groups.
General:  Any other duties as assigned by the directors
