Colombia is located in the northwest part of South America and is the fourth largest country in South America (after Brazil, Argentina and Peru) with a total area of nearly 1.14 million square kilometers. The capital city of Bogotá has a population of 7 million inhabitants and is the largest economic center in Colombia. Bulgaria's population of more than 7.5 million people consists mainly of ethnic Bulgarians, with two sizable minorities being Turks and Romans. Ninety-six percent of the population speaks Bulgarian as their mother tongue, and almost 83% belong to the Roman Orthodox Church. The YMCA of Colombia The first local YMCA was established in Bogota and emphasized programs in physical education, recreation and camping. The Colombian Federation of YMCAs was formed in 1976 to lead and organize what are now 11 YMCAs in nine cities. These YMCAs operate
57 social programs in 51 municipalities directly benefiting almost 20,000 people. These YMCAs have implemented diverse programs in response to the needs of their populations. However, from its beginning, the YMCA has based its work on the development of children and young people, primarily those who are at risk for or are victims of violence, mistreatment, prostitution and rebellion groups, as well as those who have been abandoned.Among the YMCA's leadership development programs are: The National Plan for Volunteer Development, formed to educate young volunteers about the history and work of the YMCA with the goal to form committed and knowledgeable volunteers. The National School for the Formation of Youth Leaders, which focuses on the cultural and civic empowerment of youth. The Youth Building Community Projects, which provides education in the five most marginalized municipalities in Colombia about sexual and reproductive health; HIV and AIDS; environmental and physical health; conflict resolution; and leadership skills. ▼ To learn more about YMCA work around the world visit www.ymca.net/worldservice. |
